The Awesomeness of TeenReaderCon

Monday, November 10th, 2014

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, I went to the first-ever TeenReaderCon right here in the Capital District. And it was awesome!

(Totally stole borrowed this pic from the TeenReaderCon Facebook page! You should visit the page to see the rest of the photos.)

That’s me, bottom left, along with Eric Devine, Patricia McCormick, Joseph Bruchac, Steve Sheinkin, and Jay Asher. They were so fantastic — truly lovely (and slightly crazy) people. Picture Eric doing a victory wave as he ran down the aisle when his name was announced. Imagine Joe quite literally eating his words during a terrifying fun panel in which we had to make up a story on the spot. These are truly talented authors, and I’m flattered that I was invited to be there with them. Jay blogged about TeenReaderCon here. You should read it. 🙂 (Note to self: TAKE PICTURES NEXT TIME.)

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the hundreds of tweens and teens who came to the event! I was particularly happy to meet fellow Whovians and…hmm, what do you call people who love the show Arrow? Arrowians? Arrowheads? Smitten? Well, whatever you call us, it was great. 🙂

For my session, I talked about why we care about fictional characters. The great news is that I didn’t puke from nerves! Actually, I had a terrific time, thanks to the wonderful people who attended my three sessions and the fantastic volunteers who made sure I didn’t make the PowerPoint explode. Plus I got to talk about how much I loved Park Sheridan from Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park, so it was a huge win.

The TeenReaderCon committee rocked! I’ve never met such warm, wonderful, witty volunteers! From the incredible librarians and educators to the fantastic, passionate teens, everyone involved had the event running like a well-oiled machine. I did my first-ever PowerPoint presentation, and thanks to Alex and the other Tech gods, it all worked perfectly!

A huge thanks goes to Alicia Abdul, the incredible Albany High School librarian who made TeenReaderCon possible! She earned her sparkly pink tiara twice over! (It really was a great tiara! I really should have taken a picture!)

So again, TeenReaderCon committee: You guys rock out loud! You did a fantastic job, and I can’t wait to see what you do for TeenReaderCon 2: Son of TeenReaderCon!
