April updates

Friday, April 5th, 2013

April already? Yow.

Okay, BREATH winners, I know you’ve heard this song before — but the books/posters are **finally** going out today, really really. Sorry for the delay. Hope it was worth the wait.

The event on Wednesday was terrific — thank you to everyone who attended! I’m waiting for the final count, but it looks like we raised almost $300 for the Shen/Shaker sports scholarship in memory of Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers. Thank you again, everyone!

I’ll be doing a reading/signing/talk at Flights of Fantasy on Tuesday, April 16, starting at 7 pm. And since this is the date that BREATH officially launches, you better believe there will be copies there for purchase. 🙂

Also on Tuesday April 16, I will be speaking at Albany High School. My books will be there for purchase, too, so yowza!

And the week of April 15 through April 19, I will be doing a BREATH blog tour. There may be a giveaway involved. Details to follow!

Skipping ahead to May, I’ll be at the RT Booklovers Convention in Kansas City, from Wednesday May 1 until Sunday, May 5. I’ll be on a panel or two, and will do a speed reading, and will be at the ginormous book fare that Saturday. Hope to see you there!

Finally, I’ll be off the interwebz until April 13 — because the revision of TO BEAR AN IRON KEY is due Friday, April 12. 🙂

That’s all, folks!

News: Upcoming Talk At Arts Center Of The Capital Region

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

Mark Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in your calendars. At 7:30 that evening, I’ll be speaking as part of the new Hear The Author series (started by my friend, motivational speaker Bob Clancy). Here’s the official info:

Jackie Morse Kessler is the author of a critically acclaimed quartet of issue-oriented paranormal novels focused on teen protagonists, the Riders of the Apocalypse series, and will give a talk titled “Never Give Up: A Writer’s Guide to Overcoming Challenges And Achieving Goals”.

The Riders series comprises Hunger, a starred SLJ novel about an anorexic teenage girl who becomes Famine; Rage, a novel about a teen cutter who becomes War; Loss, in which a bullied teenage boy is tricked into becoming Pestilence of the Riders of the Apocalypse; and Breath, which will have depression and suicide as subjects and will be available in April 2013.

100% of the proceeds will go to a Shen & Shaker Sports Scholarship.

PLEASE REMEMBER: This event will take place at the Arts Center of the Capital Region, at 265 River Street, 2 blocks north of the Music Hall.
* * * * *
A package including tickets to all three Hear the Author events is available for $24. Packages must be bought at the box office at (518) 273-0038.

I’m very excited about this upcoming event. The past year was a big one for me in terms of soul-searching and, by the end of the year, personal growth. I’ve stressed so much about writing and publishing over the years, and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to regain balance. I’ll be talking about how I got there — it will be about writing, and publishing, and overcoming challenges. There will be a Q&A session following my talk — writers and readers are welcome to ask about the Riders books, my upcoming novel To Bear An Iron Key (Month9Books, spring 2014), how to stay sane while pursuing a writing career, who my favorite Winchester is in Supernatural, why chocolate should be its own food group…you name it! And I believe there will also be a bookseller on site, with copies of the Riders books (not including Breath, which will come out mid-April). I’ll have small posters for all attendees. (Note to self: Order posters!)

If you’re wondering about the sports scholarship, Bob set that up for local high schools Shaker and Shenendehowa. It’s in memory of the two seniors who died, as well as to honor the two other seniors who were injured, in a car accident in December.

Here the the links for the other two speakers in the Hear the Author series: local authors Bob Clancy and John Blowers.

I hope to see you on Wednesday, April 3!

LOSS book signing

Albacon 2011

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

So hey, check it out: I’m going to be the Writer Guest of Honor at Albacon this year, October 21 – 23, 2011. Rah! It’s right here in Albany, NY, which is, like, so close to New York City (on a map) that it’s practically kissing the Upper East Side.

What is Albacon, you ask? It’s a local fan-run SF/F convention that celebrates science fiction and fantasy books, flicks and TV. But hey, it’s not just epic fantasy and space opera; it’s urban fantasy and paranormal romance and military SF and horror and almost any sub (and sub-sub) genre in the SF/F field. It celebrates fiction for adults and fiction for teens. There are panels and workshops and vendor booths galore. There are banquets and costumes and (rumor has it) a keynote from yours truly.

Albacon is very laid back. It’s a fun, low-pressure sort of convention, run and attended by terrific SF/F fans and authors who love the genre. And hey – there’s a bar. Woot!

Programming is being finalized, but I’m crossing my fingers that there will be:

  • A panel on the worlds of Joss Whedon. And that’s not just because I wrote a short comic set in the Buffyverse! Give me Firefly. And Doctor Horrible. (Dollhouse? Erm.) And yeah, Buffy and Angel and the Scoobies.
  • A favorite monsters panel, be it vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, or something completely different. Me? I’d vote for demons. Some people might say “Death,” but any character that looks like Kurt Cobain just can’t be a monster, sorry.
  • A writing-focused day of workshops that cover a broad array of topics (OMG, I’ve lapsed into Business Speak!), including queries, the changing author/agent relationship, the realities of e-SP (electronic self-publishing), spicing up nooky scenes, choreographing an action scene…really, my hope for this sort of thing is almost endless.
  • Hey, if I’m fantasizing, I also hope that Matt Damon will be there. And Nathan Fillion. And Neil Gaiman.

And hey, I mentioned there’s a bar, right? (That part’s not a fantasy. That’s a fact. Bars at SF/F are mandatory.)

Registration is cheap, the authors and fans are awesome, and hey, you need something to do in October. Come to the thriving metropolis of Albany, NY, and hang your hat at Albacon.

RAGE Blog Tour: Book Smugglers and Presenting Lenore and RT

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Hey there! Sorry I didn’t post yesterday; traveling from New York to California sort of messed me up, time-wise. I’m at the RT Booklovers Convention this week — today I will be moderating the 1 pm panel about worldbuilding in urban fantasy.

Yesterday, I guest posted at The Book Smugglers, and Ana shared her thoughts about RAGE.

Today, I should be guest blogging at Presenting Lenore (who, by the way, recently scored a phenomenal deal, so please congratulate her!).

Remember to comment so that you can be entered in the ginormous giveaway for a chance to receive HUNGER, RAGE, and some other goodies!

And now, it’s off to the hotel gym. Rah!

Guest blogging at Dark Faerie Tales

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

All throughout April, I’ll be doing a blogosphere world tour. Lots of guest posts; lots of interviews. Lots of RAGE reviews, eek!

In other news: I finally got my taxes off to my accountant (rah!!!) and I’m full-speed ahead on LOSS (double rah!!!).

And a reminder: If you’re in the Albany, NY area, I’ll be at the Empire State Book Festival this Saturday for a 2:45 pm panel called “She Blinded Me with Science Fiction,” followed by a Meet & Greet (aka, signing copies of RAGE) at 4:45pm. I’ll also be doing a reading at Flights of Fantasy on Monday, April 4, starting at 7 pm. Hope to see you there!

HUNGER blog tour: The Hiding Spot – plus winner

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Very short post today because I have to get ready for tournament tae kwon do class (owie) and then for Albacon. So superfast…

First, there will be a review of HUNGER at The Hiding Spot today! I don’t know when, and I don’t know if it will be a good review or not. How exciting! I’ll have to check back later. Fingers crossed… [Edited to add: Due to technical difficulties, Sara’s review didn’t go up until Sunday. Here it is…and all I can say is YAY! Definitely worth the wait!]

Second, if you will be at Albacon today, I’m on a 12 noon panel about vampires, doing a 1 pm signing of HUNGER, and then a 5 pm reading from HUNGER and RAGE. Hope to see you there!

And last, but not least…the winner of the signed copy of HUNGER, picked randomly, is…

Sloth- He would be the horseman that people would sit around and wait for. I imagine him coming out of the TV for the couch potatoes!

Congratulations, Becci! Please email me via my website contact form, and give me your postal address so I can send you the signed copy. Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you to all 126 people (OMG) who entered! Do stick around; there may be other contests and giveaways.
